The Literacy Phase of Basic Education

The Literacy Phase of Institute of Adult Education in Helsinki is aimed at students

  • who cannot read or write in the Latin alphabet (ABC) or
  • whose reading and writing skills are only at the level ’starting’ or ’developing’ literacy or
  • whose reading and writing skills are not yet sufficient for Introductory Phase studies
  • who have not completed the equivalent of Finnish primary school education in their home country or elsewhere.

Studying in the Literacy Phase

The Literacy Phase lasts until the student can move on to the Introductory Phase studies or all the courses in the Literacy Phase are done. The studies last for approximately 1 year and they entail 27-30 courses (á 28 hours) of studies in Finnish language, mathematics, social studies, environmental and nature sciences, guidance and optional courses. The Literacy Phase groups study between hours 8.15 a.m. and 13.30 p.m.

Officially the Literacy Phase is a part of the Introductory Phase of Basic Education for adults.
