The Final Phase

The Final Phase of Basic Education

The Final Phase of basic education for adults at Helsingin aikuisopiston peruskoulu is for students who

• have the study skills needed in the Final Phase
• speak Finnish at level A2.1 or higher
• know basic mathematics and English and
• have not completed studies equal to Finnish basic education in their home country or anywhere else.

How long the Final Phase takes

The Final Phase usually takes 1.5–2 years. It includes 46–50 courses. One course is 28 hours.

In the Final Phase, you study:

• Finnish
• English (A language)
• Swedish (B language)
• mathematics
• physics
• chemistry
• history
• social studies
• biology
• geography
• health education
• religion (Islam) or ethics
• study guidance
• optional courses.

To get the basic education certificate, you must complete at least 46 Final Phase courses. These must include all the compulsory courses in the curriculum.

Studying in the Final Phase

Lessons can be from Monday to Thursday between 8.30 and 17.00 and on Fridays between 8.30 and 14.00. The school year has six periods. Your timetable and courses change from period to period. Most students study full-time.

After the Final Phase, many students continue to vocational education or general upper secondary school (lukio), or they go straight to working life. We help each student find the best next step.
