The Literacy Phase of Basic Education

The Literacy Phase of basic education for adults at Helsingin aikuisopiston peruskoulu is for students who

• cannot read and write in the Latin alphabet (ABC) or
• can read and write only a little or
• cannot yet read and write well enough for the Introductory Phase
• have not completed studies equal to Finnish basic education in their home country or anywhere else.

Studying in the Literacy Phase

You study in the Literacy Phase until you can move on to the Introductory Phase or until you have completed all the courses. The studies take about one year. They include 27–30 courses. One course is 28 hours.

In the Literacy Phase, you study:

• Finnish
• mathematics
• social studies
• environment and nature studies
• study guidance
• optional courses.

You study full-time. Lessons are from Monday to Friday between 8.30 and 14.00.

Officially, the Literacy Phase is part of the Introductory Phase of basic education for adults.

Sometimes a student’s life situation changes. Then the student can move, for example, to literacy training in liberal adult education or to the literacy module of integration training. We help each student find the best next step.
