Basic training for Shiatsu therapists
Offered in collaboration with Helsinki Adult Education Institute and Heart Management shiatsu training (basic shiatsu therapist training) is the key to holistic well-being and professional growth. This training is suitable for anyone interested in bodywork, and it is also an excellent addition to those already working in bodywork. You can also study the skill for yourself.
What is Shiatsu massage?
Shiatsu massage is a Japanese form of treatment based on Chinese medicine and offers holistic well-being. Its aim is to support the body's natural healing processes and promote overall well-being. Shiatsu harmonizes the body's functions, relieves pain and tension, relaxes the body and mind and improves metabolism. It is an excellent aid for stress relief and helps with many common ailments, such as sleep problems, fatigue, headaches, neck pain and back pain.
Shiatsu training content and benefits
The versatile training, which lasts approximately six months, will provide you with a broad understanding of shiatsu and Chinese medicine. You will learn a variety of techniques for treatment, client work and self-care.
The key areas of training are:
- Shiatsu theory: You will deepen your understanding of Ki, East Asian cosmology (Yin–Yang, Ki astrology), Chinese medicine theory (meridian theory) and important tsubo (aku) points. You will become familiar with the five-step theory and its implications in nursing.
- Treatment techniques: You will master shiatsu pressure with the palm, thumb, fingers, elbows and knees. You will learn different treatment positions and other techniques such as holding, rotating, shaking and rubbing. The training also includes meridian and limb stretches.
- Personal development: You will practice meditation and Ki movement, body alignment and mindfulness. The training includes supervised treatments, small group exercises and exercises that support self-reflection such as do-in, qigong and Tao Yoga. Makko-Ho meridian exercises are also an important part. You will also learn the rules of professional conduct and ethics.

After training:
- You will understand the basic principles of shiatsu and Chinese medicine.
- You know how to plan and perform shiatsu treatment.
- You manage safety aspects and contraindications.
- You know how to create a pleasant and professional reception situation for the customer.
- You have completed the required 50 practice treatments and returned your homework.

Shiatsu training is organized as face-to-face instruction in Helsinki at the premises of the Helsinki Adult Education Center.
