October 24.10–December 8.12 Fish
For five years my subject has been fish. Zander, perch and herring are scurrying around in my paintings, sometimes on wax paper, sometimes on a plate. Sometimes freely on the wall. What is it about these shiny little things that fascinates me?
The history of painting is full of fish still lifes, silver-finned fish on silver platters, fish juxtaposed with translucent onions or scrounging on the dirty counter of a market stall. Fish as a subject is loaded with meanings, often Christian ones, vanitas vibes and depictions of everyday life, but above all it often feels like it is full of the painter's pure joy. The pleasure of searching for light and sparkle. Still life painting is about learning your own gaze as a creator and viewer. The basic grain of painting.
As an artist, I also find much more in the paintings, the dignity and strangeness of the fish, a gaze that studies the fish and sees all of us in it, lumps of flesh dragged into a foreign environment.
