Band courses, instrument courses
There are several band courses available in different musical styles and levels. The general band course teaches ensemble playing of pop, rock and country music from different decades with basic chord accompaniment skills. Seniors can participate in a band course aimed at them, which focuses on popular music from the 1950s-70s. In addition, a course is organized for old dance music, such as waltz and tango, requiring more solid basic skills from the players. There is also a jazz repertoire course for developing improvisation and ensemble playing, as well as an English band course for beginners. Heavy song
Heavy metal singing courses offer several courses for different levels focusing on metal music vocal techniques. The basic course teaches, among other things, distortion singing and growling, while the intensive course deepens the use of the voice and introduces exercises to relax the vocal cords. The advanced course aims to improve voice quality and develop musicality by expanding the vocal repertoire. In addition, the intensive course offers a low-threshold introduction to heavy metal singing, debunking myths related to it and teaching the basics.

Kitara
There are several guitar courses available for different levels, from beginner to advanced. The courses cover the basics, such as playing position and chords, as well as advanced skills, such as playing solos and improvisation. The lessons are in Finnish and English, and students need their own instrument. Most courses focus on pop and rock music, and include practical exercises and song learning.
Classical singing – Adult singing lessons
Classical singing courses involve singing alone, together or with a partner. Singing lessons involve practicing various breathing and voice exercises and introducing you to a wide range of classical singing repertoire. Read more about classical singing.
Machine music
In the Computer Music Basics course, you will learn the basics of computer music and music production. You will learn about rhythm making, recording, sampling, synthesizer logic, mixing basics, and how effects devices work.

Choirs, pop choirs Helsinki

Singing groups, group singing lessons
Group singing lessons introduce you to the basic techniques of voice formation and sing songs of different styles together. The selection includes, among others, the Tahdon laulaa! course, the Finnish pop and rock pearls singing course, the Lamentation course, small groups of pop/jazz singing and classical singing, and intensive courses for those with no singing skills. The Basics of Voice Singing course gives you an introduction to voice singing at a low level, and the Let's Sing ABBAA course sings only songs by the ABBA group.

Music theory courses teach the basics of music theory from the basics of playing, singing, composing, and songwriting. In the Basics of Music Notation course, you will learn to recognize notes from a staff and read music notation using the most common clefs.

Music lessons and courses for children and adults
Helsingin aikuisopisto offers a wide range of music courses for children and adults. There are baby music classes and toddler music classes, as well as music classes for 3-4 year olds. Music classes immerse you in the world of music, inspired by stories. Music classes bring the joy of music and fun togetherness in a group. Participating in baby and toddler music classes strengthens the positive interaction between the child and the parent. In music classes for 3-4 year olds, the child participates without a parent. Piano
Piano lessons are available for all ages and skill levels. There are beginner courses, advanced courses and more specialized courses, such as for seniors and those interested in Disney music. In addition, the selection includes individual and pair lessons, tailored to the student's personal needs and goals, as well as English-language groups. A pop/jazz song
In individual pop-jazz singing lessons, you will go through the techniques specific to pop singing and learn to use your singing voice correctly and healthily. In addition, you will work on songs of your choice under the guidance of a teacher throughout the course. In a small pop-jazz singing group, the student also receives personal guidance in the presence of other group members. In addition to exercises done together, each participant practices 1-2 songs with the help of a teacher. In addition, the institute offers beginner and intensive pop-jazz singing courses.

Composing
The Songwriting course is about making songs. During the course, you will learn the basics of songwriting, and you will receive instructions and exercises to facilitate the creative process. During the course, you will also learn and analyze musical and lyrical techniques.
For ukulele
Beginner ukulele courses teach the basics of playing techniques, notation, chords, melodies, tuning and string changing for beginners who need their own ukulele. The advanced beginner course deepens what has been learned and challenges students with more advanced melodies and chords, assuming previous participation in the beginner course.
Subscription courses
Does your company need to organize a program for a quiet/busy day or other recreational days or kick-off events? We organize various activities and workshops to help create a sense of community and relaxation.
Subscription courses can also be a fun addition to birthday parties, bachelor parties, or various evenings with friends.
Music courses for seniors
The college also offers music courses designed specifically for seniors. The offerings include piano lessons, a day choir, and a band course for seniors. All senior courses are held as day courses.

College facilities Located with good transport connections, the courses are easy to get to. The courses are held at the university building on Runeberginkatu or in the center of Helsinki on Annankatu.

The lesson length is 45 minutes.
The language of instruction for the courses is usually Finnish. In many courses, teachers can also teach in English or another language. You can ask the student guidance office what language will be used in the course.
Everyone must bring their musical instruments to class.
During piano lessons, each participant will have their own keyboard and headphones ready for use in the teaching space during the lesson.
The band courses are equipped with sound equipment, two guitar and one bass amplifier, drums, an electric piano and keyboard, and one bass, electric and acoustic guitar.
Remember to take care of your own insurance coverage, as the college does not take out insurance for students.

Study advice
Distance teaching
Some of the teaching at Helsinki Adult Education Centre is organised via distance learning, for example using Zoom. Distance learning applications are easy to use and you can join the class from home. The link you receive will automatically direct you to the distance learning class.
