Arabic language courses
The institute offers courses from basic general and literary Finnish to advanced courses up to level A2.2.
Spoken Arabic
Arabic is a very rich and diverse language, spoken by about 300 million people in a region stretching from Iraq to Morocco. In this vast region, the actual mother tongue of the people, used in all normal everyday situations, is overwhelmingly one of the spoken forms of Arabic. There can be such great differences between the spoken languages of different regions that mutual communication between speakers from different regions using their mother tongue is difficult, sometimes even impossible. However, our program also includes a basic course in general spoken Arabic, which focuses on simple communication using vocabulary that is common to different Arab countries.
Arabic literary language
The Arabic language area is united by the standard Arabic language, which is studied in other Arabic courses at our school. It acts as a bridge over different spoken languages, and is used in all official situations: in speeches, radio, TV, the press and literature. The so-called diglossia therefore prevails in the Arabic language area, when two language forms exist side by side, each for its own purpose. There is no shortcut to quickly mastering Arabic. In school, we study the standard Arabic language, not the spoken language spoken by children in normal life. The standard language, classical Arabic, has never been used as a means of everyday communication, but developed early on as a means of expressing poetry and aesthetics, a high style. The standard language also has several levels, starting from the language of pre-Islamic poems and the language of the Quran that have survived to us, to the language of medieval literature and finally to modern standard Arabic. The Arabic language is a veritable treasure trove of vocabulary and expressions, offering endless new things to discover and learn.
