Handicraft courses

The range of courses in handicrafts covers a wide range of different courses, from crafts to woodworking, from sewing to tufting. The courses are often short in duration. Most courses are also suitable for beginners.

Craft courses

The school's craft courses live with the seasons. Make hooks and coat racks, candlesticks, stands and flower pots from natural materials such as birch, willow or coniferous wood. Make a modern cereal garland or a heart-shaped pine cone wreath for Christmas. You will also learn to make crochet hooks and knitting needles, as well as brushes and brushes from different types of wood, which are treated with vegetable oil-based wax, making them pleasant to use.

Ceramics

In the courses you can learn to make objects and dishes of your own design by hand building. Techniques used include pinching, sausage and plate techniques. The clay surface can be patterned in many different ways, for example by pressing patterns into soft clay or carving into dried clay. The products are finished with colorful glazes. In the courses it is also possible to try pottery making.

Jewelry courses

The institute offers a variety of jewelry courses. The courses focus on either bead weaving or silver jewelry making. Silver courses are offered at several levels, from beginner to advanced. Beginner courses teach basic techniques, such as sawing and filing. The advanced course (January-February 2026) introduces more advanced techniques, such as setting stones. The equipment used in the courses is available from the institute, and the materials can be purchased from the teacher.

Embroidery

Embroidery courses allow you to create new things and decorate old things using embroidery and sashiko techniques. Pictorial and visual expression with thread.

Weaving

In the creative weaving workshop you will make your own art textile. With lap looms you can also make patterned fabrics in small sizes.

Macrame / knotting

In the basics of macrame, you will learn basic knots and can make various easy but impressive products such as wall decorations or hanging baskets. In the Christmas gift course, you will make larger or miniature decorations, for example for the Christmas tree and as gifts. Light string macrame brings light to the darkest time of year. After learning the basics of the pirtanauha technique, you can make more different things for yourself and as gifts.

Sewing

Basic courses teach how to use a sewing machine, basic stitches and how to make simple products such as cloth bags and zipper pouches. Advanced courses deepen your knowledge of using ready-made patterns, sewing clothes and finishing interior products. There are also courses on offer where you can make clothes for dogs or children, mend and repair, make shirts or bags, sew with a child or learn about sewing machine maintenance on a short course. You can get acquainted with sewing in a morning course while receiving guidance and help with your own projects. The courses are held in both Finnish and English.

Woodwork

The woodworking course offers participants the opportunity to make small wooden pieces either by hand or with the help of machines. The course is suitable for both beginners and more experienced woodworking enthusiasts, and you will learn the correct working methods and sequence. Participants can bring their own projects and you will also get to try turning.

Interior design

In the Interior Design Basics course, you will learn how to coordinate room proportions, home furniture, colors, materials, and lighting. The goal is to create a beautiful and functional home.

Tufting

In the tufting course, you will learn how to use a trendy tufting needle and design your own work, such as wall textiles, pillows or bags, as well as how to make a tufting pattern designed for the course.

Subscription courses

A custom-made craft course can be, for example, an hour-long, low-threshold macrame, weaving, or modeling clay workshop.

It's easy for us to come

The college premises are located with good transport connections, making it easy to get to the courses. The courses are held at the college building on Runeberginkatu or in the center of Helsinki on Annankatu.

Remember

The lesson length is 45 minutes.

The language of instruction for the courses is usually Finnish. In many courses, teachers can also teach in English or another language. You can ask the student guidance office what language will be used in the course.

You can request a certificate from the office once the course has been completed.

Handicraft supplies are usually not included in the course fee. You can purchase them from the teacher or according to the teacher's instructions.
