Helsingin aikuisopisto > Basic Education > The Literacy Phase of Basic Education

The Literacy Phase of Institute of Adult Education in Helsinki is aimed at students

  • who cannot read or write in the Latin alphabet (ABC) or
  • whose reading and writing skills are only at the level ’starting’ or ’developing’ literacy or
  • whose reading and writing skills are not yet sufficient for Introductory Phase studies
  • and who are 18 years or older, and who have not completed the equivalent of Finnish primary school education in their home country.

The Literacy Phase lasts until the student can move into the starting phase studies. The studies are approximately 1 year in duration and the entail 27-30 courses (á 28 hours) of studies in Finnish language, mathematics, social studies, enivronmental and nature sciences, guidance and optional courses.

Officially the Literacy Phase is a part of the Introductory Phase of basic education for adults.

Since life situations often vary, one can move from the Literacy Phase into literacy training within liberal adult education or the literacy module of acculturation training (the so-called semi-literates). The aim of guidance is to find each student the most suitable forward path.
