Helsingin aikuisopisto > Basic Education > The Introductory Phase of Basic Education

The Introductory Phase of Institute of Adult Education in Helsinki is aimed at students

  • who cannot yet start the Final Phase studies,
  • who can read and write in the Latin alphabet (ABC),
  • whose skills in the Finnish language are approximately A1.3 and
  • who are 18 years or older, and who have not completed the equivalent of Finnish primary school education in their home country.

The Introductory Phase lasts until the student can move into the Final Phase studies. The studies are approximately 1 year in duration and they entail 38-42 courses (á 28 hours) of studies in the Finnish language, basic English language, mathematics, social studies, enivronmental and nature sciences, health studies, handicrafts, plus guidance and optional courses.

Since life situations often vary, one can (temporarily) move from the Introductory Phase into working life or language courses. The aim of guidance is to find each student the most suitable forward path.
