When does school begin and finish?
Spring term begins on Monday January 7, 2019 and ends on Friday May 31, 2019.
Who can apply?
Everyone who lives in Finland can apply. However, asylum seekers we can only accept, for possible extra places, max two (2) students per group. We do not recommend that you apply if you have completed academic studies, secondary school or basic education in your home country.
When are the entrance exams?
Test are held in Töölöntullinkatu 8. Applicants will be invited either by post, mail or text message. Please keep the whole test day free.
Are there vacation periods during basic education?
Yes, there is an autumn break in week 42, Christmas and New Year’s break in week 52 and week 1 as well as a ski break in week 8.
How many lessons are there each day?
In the literacy phase and introductory phase, there are 5 hours of teaching per day, Monday to Friday. Student can also receive extra teaching if necessary.
In the final phase students study 6-8 hours per day depending on their own individual curriculum. Students can also receive extra tuition and guidance.
What time is the teaching?
The literacy phase groups study between 8.15 a.m. and 12.30 p.m., the introductory phase groups study between 8.40 a.m. and 4 p.m. and the final phase groups study Mondays through Thursdays between 11 a.m. and 8 p.m. and Fridays between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m.
How long does it take to graduate?
Usually it takes one year to complete the literacy phase and around one year to complete the introductory phase.
The final phase can be completed in around 1,5 years but each student has their own curriculum and if student has some previous studies it can take less time to graduate. You will know more once you begin your studies.
Can I get study allowance from Kela?
What if I am a client at the TE Office?
It is best to ask your TE Office if it is ok for them that you start to study.
If it says on your integration plan that basic education is supported, it is ok for you to come and study at the Institute of Adult Education in Helsinki.
TE Office monitors the attendance and progress of the studies.
