When does school begin and finish?

The Autumn term begins on Monday August 10, 2020 and ends on Friday December 18, 2020. The Spring term begins on January 11 and end on May 28 2021.

Who can apply?

Everyone who lives in Finland can apply. However, asylum seekers we can only accept, for possible extra places, max two (2) students per group. We do not recommend that you apply if you have completed academic studies, secondary school or basic education in your home country.

When are the entrance exams?

There were no exams in the Spring 2020 due the COVID19 and the applicants were contacted by phone if necessary. Will inform the suitable applicants about the possible exams in December 2020.

Are there vacation periods during basic education?

Yes, there is an autumn break in week 42, Christmas and New Year’s break in week 52 and week 1 as well as a Winter break in week 8.

How many lessons are there each day?

In the literacy phase and introductory phase, there are 5 hours of teaching per day, Monday to Friday. Student can also receive extra teaching if necessary.

In the final phase students study 6-8 hours per day depending on their own individual curriculum. Students can also receive extra tuition and guidance.

What time is the teaching?

The literacy phase groups study between 8.15 a.m. and 13.30 p.m., the introductory phase groups study between 8.40 a.m. and 4 p.m. and the final phase groups study Mondays through Thursdays between 11 a.m. and 8 p.m. and Fridays between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m.

How long does it take to graduate?

Usually it takes one year to complete the literacy phase and around one year to complete the introductory phase.

The final phase can be completed in around 1,5 years but each student has their own curriculum and if student has some previous studies it can take less time to graduate. You will know more once you begin your studies.

Where is the school located?

The school is in Etu-Töölö 700 meters from Kamppi metro station near the city center. Many buses and trams stop near by. We also have bicycle stands but we don’t have no parking space.

Can I get study allowance from Kela?


What if I am a client at the TE Office?

It is best to ask your Employment Office (TE-palvelut) if they agree that you start studying in Basic education.

If it written on your integration plan that basic education is supported, there aren’t usually any problems  for you to come and study at the Institute of Adult Education in Helsinki.

TE Office monitors the attendance and progress of the studies.

What does Basic education cost?

If you are accepted as a student in Literacy Phase, Introductory Phase or Final Phase of Basic education, the studying doesn’t cost anything. If you only wish to attend certain Basic education Finnish or English courses ask about the tuition fee at the office.
