The basic band line-up usually includes a guitarist, bassist, drummer and keyboardist. In addition, the band may also have a separate singer. Many bands may also have other players and singers, such as a saxophonist, trumpeter and backing vocalists. Playing in a band develops teamwork skills. Band courses introduce the role of different instruments in ensemble playing, song arranging and basic band playing skills, and play a variety of different types of music. The band is usually amplified and the sound is driven through a PA system. In a band, the drums play accompaniment, i.e. a continuous, steady rhythm, the bass usually plays accompanying bass patterns, staying in the background and following the accompaniment patterns of the drums and/or guitar, the guitar and keyboard play melody or harmony, i.e. chords.
The college offers five band courses, two of which are taught in English, and three band courses in Finnish, one of which is aimed at seniors. There are courses for beginners as well as continuing students.
