What is logotherapy?

Logotherapy was developed by Viktor E. Frankl (1905–1997), a Viennese professor of neurology, psychiatry and logotherapy, doctor of medicine and philosophy. He also called logotherapy existential analysis. The key contents of logotherapy are related to the concept of man and finding a place of human size. Man is seen as responsible and at least partially free to react to his situation, his past, and everything he has experienced.

In addition to the physical and psychosocial essence, logotherapy's understanding of the human being includes a spiritual dimension, which enables one to live out one's personal freedom and responsibility. Heredity and environmental factors do not determine what kind of future a person can have. Logotherapy has its roots in philosophy and psychology.

Experiences of purpose, meaning, and meaningfulness in life and work are closely related to human well-being. Logotherapy, or purpose-centered thinking developed by Viktor E. Franklin, challenges us to reflect on our own present, past, and future through the lens of intentionality. Such reflection leads us to ask ourselves whether we are on the right path. The question is existential: one that everyone should consider not only at turning points in life but also when a vague (motion) sickness or feeling of emptiness creeps into our mind and/or body. In the framework of logotherapy, existential reflection is related to both our own existence and its purpose.

In practice, logotherapy helps to find perspectives and answers about where to go in different areas of life and why. It also offers practical and theoretically proven ways to reflect on the values and purpose of life, learn to face adversity, and find hope and positivity in life.

Logotherapy can be applied in all areas of life, such as work, family life, education and teaching, as well as life skills issues. The greatest gift of logotherapy is that it supports being human and the purpose-oriented resolution of related problems in this time. The issues of our time are mostly problems of the spiritual dimension, which, if unresolved and incorrectly resolved, can cause physical and psychosocial disorders and illnesses.

Logotherapy can be described as a model of education and self-education, life skills, and strengthening coping and support skills. In this sense, it has also been called logopedagogy and resource-centered brief therapy. Logotherapy is also called the third Viennese psychotherapy direction. However, this training does not qualify you as a psychotherapist in Finland.
