FM Nuppu Tuononen from Helsinki Adult Education Centre has been selected as the 2019 S2 Teacher of the Year at the national Finnish as a Second Language Development Days on 7.10.2019 October XNUMX. The Finnish as a Second Language Teacher of the Year was announced by the Director-General of the Finnish National Agency for Education, Olli-Pekka Heinonen.

Nupu's career as a Finnish as a second language teacher is long, varied and successful.

According to OPH's selection criteria, "Nuppu Tuononen is a respected teacher and coordinator in her work community, who shares her digital and assessment expertise with her colleagues both in various training courses and on social media. She has prepared numerous learning material sets and also works as a drafter and assessor of Finnish language tests for general language qualifications and promotes the awareness of plain language. When guiding language courses, she meets adult Finnish language learners every day, from those practicing their reading skills to those with higher education."

Nuppu Tuononen commented on her choice on Facebook with the following words: A little confused, but very grateful for this evening! I have had the privilege of learning and growing with wonderful teachers, colleagues and friends from the very beginning. I have learned everything that has been said about me today from them. I have also received the best from the students – then it is easy to teach well. Warm thanks!

Tuononen believes that one of the best aspects of the field is its versatility and changeability. Students are also diverse and have different needs when it comes to language learning. “Helsinki Adult Education Centre has a diverse course selection and a huge amount of cooperation with various actors. Within the institution, it is possible to guide, for example, a student who is already using the language independently to music or sports courses. Meeting other adult education centre students supports the experience of inclusion for immigrants,” Tuononen comments.

The selection of the Finnish as a Second Language Teacher of the Year was organized by the Finnish as a Second Language Teachers Association together with the Finnish National Board of Education. In addition to the above parties, the universities of Helsinki and Jyväskylä and educational institutions were also represented on the award committee.
