Amos Tuomainen is a 16-year-old talented boxing enthusiast whose goal for the near future is success in the European Youth Championships.
– I started at the age of 13 as a first-year C-junior in the Lohja Boxing Club competition group. The sport immediately felt like my own and I got really excited about it. After the third training session, my coach contacted my parents and asked if I could participate in the competitions that were looming in a couple of months, even though, as is customary, first-year enthusiasts are not yet allowed to compete.
Amos' strengths include being quick to learn and develop.
– I have received good feedback from my coaches that I can react to instructions given even in the competition ring. My hobby background has certainly contributed to my quickly adopting the characteristics of boxing. Before boxing, I did parkour, trampoline sports and martial arts such as krav maga and karate.
The fire of competition was ignited right from the first match.
– In my first indoor competition, I faced a boxer who was older, taller and had been in the sport for longer, and I clearly beat him. Over the course of a year, I participated in several indoor competitions and won them all.
In the following years, Amos continued to participate in tournaments with great success.
– I won the Youth Boxing tournament, which is equivalent to the Finnish Junior Championships, in 2023 and received Finnish Junior Championship silver in 2024. I won the international Pirkka tournament in 2023 and received silver in 2024. I competed in my first foreign tournament in 2024 at the King of the Ring tournament in Borås, Sweden. Although I did not win, I gained valuable experience.
– This year has gone well. I won the TUL tournament in Kemi for the third time in a row and gained international experience at the Bornemizzsa Memorial tournament in Hungary. In July, I will go on a tournament and camp trip to Ireland. In the fall, I will participate in the Kultahanska tournament, the King of the Ring tournament in Sweden, and the Finnish Championship.
Amos has also been able to spar with older people and even adults. According to the coach, many adults have been amazed at how mature and hard Amos punches. Practicing with more experienced and skilled people and participating in camps has developed Amos as an athlete.
– From the beginning, I have had the right to participate in the Finnish Boxing Association's B and A junior camps as an invitation. In 2024, I made it to the national team and this year I secured a spot on the national team, so I spent the spring training at the national team camps.
Amos, who currently boxes in the 66 kg class, aims to gain a lot of international experience, good matches and victories.
The news that three years of hard work had paid off in the form of a place in a prestigious competition reached Kesä's ears. Amos was selected, along with another youngster, to represent Finland in the U17 series at the European Championships, which will be held in Germany in December 2025.
– My next goal is to win the Finnish championship and have success at the European Youth Championships. My long-term goals include winning the European Championships and winning a medal at the World Youth Championships. My biggest dream is to compete in the Olympics one day.
The Lohja Boxing Club has attracted new enthusiasts of all ages due to Amos's competition success. The club fosters responsible players: everyone is equal and valued in the ring. The sport also emphasizes good behavior and respect for others and, above all, one's opponent.
Helsinki Adult Education Center supports the young boxing talent's hobby and progress in his competitive career. We wish Amos good luck in his training and success in achieving his dreams!
